Why Do We Have a Leap Year?

Edulin Children’s News · Week of 4 October 2026

Earth takes about 365 days and 6 hours to go around the Sun.

Earth takes about 365 days and 6 hours to go around the Sun. Those extra six hours add up, so every fourth year we add an extra day, 29 February. Without leap years, our calendar would slowly drift away from the seasons. In a hundred years, it would be off by about 24 days! So the next time you meet someone born on 29 February, remember: their birthday is rare because of the way the Sun works.
