Do Stars Really Twinkle?

Edulin Children’s News · Week of 19 April 2026

Stars look as if they twinkle, but the twinkle is an effect of our air.

Stars look as if they twinkle, but the twinkle is an effect of our air. Starlight passes through layers of moving air, which bend the light a tiny bit, making the star seem to flicker. Planets do not twinkle as much because they look like small discs, not points. Astronauts see steady stars because there is no air in space.

Reported by Myra, Class 6, Pearl Bay School, Visakhapatnam (young reporter).
