The Banyan: A Tree That Looks Like a Forest
Edulin Children’s News · Week of 6 September 2026
The banyan is India's national tree.
The banyan is India's national tree. It grows aerial roots that hang from its branches and, when they touch the ground, they become new trunks. This way, a single banyan can spread across a huge area. The famous Great Banyan in Kolkata covers about 14,500 square metres. Banyan trees give shade, shelter for birds and a place where villages meet. Many stories begin beneath one.
Reported by Advait, Class 5, Hilltop Model School, Shimla (young reporter).
